The anaerobic decomposition of l-cystine by washed cells of Proteus vulgaris.

چکیده
ADEQUATE summaries of the literature dealing with the products resulting from the decomposition of amino-acids by various bacteria have been prepared by Stephenson [1930] and Buchanan and Fulmer [1930]. In the case of cystine a study of these reviews and of more recent literature makes it evident that previous investigators have concerned themselves with the formation ofhydrogen sulphide, ethylmercaptan and diethyl sulphide from cystine, and not with the complete disintegration of the molecule. In the present paper the anaerobic decomposition of cystine by means of "washed cells" [Sandiford and Wooldridge, 1931] of Proteus vulgaris is fully described.

The production of free sulphur from l-cystine by a soil bacterium.
IN the ordinary putrefaction of protein material the protein-sulphur is liberated mainly as hydrogen sulphide accompanied in a few cases by relatively small amounts of mercaptans. The present paper is an account of an organism which is capable of the aerobic degradation of l-cystine with the direct liberation of free sulphur. In earlier work on the bacterial decomposition of cystine the medium ...

متن کاملFunction of pyridoxal phosphate in desulfhydrase systems of Proteus morganii.
It has been reported (1) that cystine is metabolized by resting cells of Proteus vulgaris and Proteus morganii to pyruvate, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide, Toluene-killed cells of P. morganii also carried out the reaction and to a lesser degree attacked homocysteine, yielding hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and some unidentified product. Inasmuch as the use of toluene-killed cells may not obviate ent...
متن کاملBactericidal activity of aerobic and anaerobic polymorphonuclear neutrophils.
Human polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) were made anaerobic by nitrogen washout (oxygen saturation <1%, Eh < -42 mV at pH 7.0), and the ability of the cells to kill bacteria was assayed and compared to the bactericidal activity of aerobic PMN. Anaerobic PMN were able to kill Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus, viridans streptococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Peptostreptococcus anaerobius,...
